Just a quick reminder that we have a quiz coming up on Tuesday, August 25. This quiz will cover Unit 1 Part 1.
So far, we’ve walked through the foundations of agricultural history, starting with hunter-gatherer societies and the ways early people understood and used their environments. From there, we examined the Neolithic Revolution—the gradual transition from a Stone Age foraging lifestyle into settled agriculture—and why that shift made permanent communities, specialized labor, and larger societies possible.
We then focused on five major agricultural centers (or “hearths”) that developed independently in different parts of the world. In class we highlighted examples from:
The Fertile Crescent and Mesopotamia
The Nile River Valley in Egypt
East Asia (Yangtze and Yellow River regions)
Native American agriculture in North America, including the Hidatsa and Anasazi (Ancestral Pueblo) peoples
A study guide for this unit is attached to this post and will also be handed out in class. Use it to review key terms, people, places, crops, and the big ideas we’ve discussed.
After the quiz, we’ll shift into the next section of the course: colonial American agriculture and the longer arc of American agricultural history that leads into the modern era.
