American Literature 10/20
Agriculture has shaped American life, economics, communities, and identity throughout our nation's history. From early settlers and independent farmers to industrialization and modern agricultural technology, the relationship between Americans and the land has influenced how we live, work, and understand our place in the world.
Before visiting the Ag Expo, consider what agriculture reveals about American society and your own life. Your responses will prepare you to observe thoughtfully and develop a more meaningful reflection after the trip.
Write your answer to the following:
Make an Informed Prediction
What do you expect to learn or encounter at the Agricultural Expo? Identify one exhibit, demonstration, technology, animal, or agricultural practice you would particularly like to understand. Explain why it interests you and what you hope to discover.
Develop an Investigative Question
Write one thoughtful, open-ended question you could ask an exhibitor or use to guide your observations. Avoid questions that can be answered with a simple yes or no.
Examples of strong questions:
How has technology changed the work required to operate a farm?
What challenges do agricultural producers face that consumers rarely consider?
How do local agricultural businesses contribute to the economy and identity of a community?
My question: ______________________________________________________
Before Thursday's reflection, be prepared to identify:
One expectation that the expo confirmed or challenged.
One observation that changed or deepened your understanding.
One connection between the expo and American life that you had not considered before.
