—Finish your TKAM book versus movie handout.
—Write out your answers to the following pre-reading questions for The Hiding Place.
1. The title of the book is The Hiding Place. What do you think might be “hidden,” and why might hiding be important in a story set during World War II?
2. Look at the cover art and back summary. What mood or emotions do they suggest? How do those images or words make you feel before reading?
3. The book is a true story about a woman named Corrie ten Boom. What challenges or decisions do you think an ordinary person might face during a time of war and persecution?
4. The Ten Boom family were known for their Christian faith. How might faith influence someone’s actions or courage in dangerous times?
5. The book takes place in the Netherlands during the Nazi occupation. What do you already know—or what do you wonder—about life in occupied countries during World War II?
6. Many people in that time had to decide whether to obey laws or follow their conscience. What do you think you would do if those two things conflicted?
7. Based on the clues from the title, cover, and summary, what themes do you predict this story might explore (for example: courage, forgiveness, sacrifice, family, or survival)? Explain your reasoning.
