Read Chapters 9–12
Part 1: Reading Check
1. Why does Scout get into a fight with Cecil Jacobs at school?
2. What does Atticus mean when he says, “Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win”?
3. How does Scout’s view of her father begin to change in these chapters?
4. Describe Aunt Alexandra’s role in the family. How does she try to influence Scout?
5. How do Calpurnia’s church and the way her congregation worships differ from the Finch family’s usual church experience?
Part 2: Vocabulary (5 pts) Define each word in your own words and use it in a new sentence:
• Provocation
• Gallant
• Articulate
• Inconsistent
• Austere
Part 3: Reflection (15 pts) Choose one of the following prompts and write a well-developed paragraph (6–8 sentences):
• Atticus says, “It’s not time to worry yet.” How does this line reflect his parenting style and his outlook on the trial?
• In these chapters, Scout learns that people see her father differently than she does. Write about a time when you discovered something surprising about a family member, teacher, or role model.
• Jem and Scout see the Black community’s faith and strength during their visit to Calpurnia’s church. How does this experience challenge their understanding of Maycomb and its people?
Part 4: Creative Option (Optional Bonus, 5 pts)
Draw or create a one-page “newspaper front page” from Maycomb during these chapters.
Include:
• A headline about Atticus defending Tom Robinson
• A short article (a few sentences) about Scout’s fight with Cecil or her struggles at school
• A short article (a few sentences) about the kids’ visit to Calpurnia’s church
